The Spectator

Since 2020 the world has experienced a massive amount of devastating events. The circumstances forced us to spectate everything through the lens of the timeline of our social media. With each scroll, one finds out about another major event that took place somewhere on our planet and we are left with no other option but to watch it unfold on our Instagram newsfeed.

‘The Spectator’ aims to demonstrate this modern spectacle culture, where one is left with no other option but to watch, unless it is happening right outside of their window.

Similar to popular practice of exhibiting artwork on white walls, to minimise any possible distractions, ‘The Spectator’ explores what would happen if one would place an event inside of a white cube – depriving it of any context, thus avoiding any bias.

This piece is neither a political statement nor an instruction on how to act instead of spectating. This piece is an observation on the way the current world seems to be, when use of social media is at its peak.
